Muncie Central Graduate inducted to Hall of Fame

We want to recognize former Bearcat and Ball State graduate, Dick Barr, who was just announced as a member of the 2026 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Class! Coach Barr graduated from Muncie Central in 1944 and then went on to a long and successful career in coaching in the state of Indiana as well as Kentucky and Texas. The late Dick Barr compiled a 479-321 record and a .599-win percentage in 34 seasons as a varsity coach, including a 416-286 mark with eight sectional titles and one regional crown in 31 seasons at six Indiana high schools. He also went 63-35 with three district titles at two schools in three seasons in Kentucky. Barr started his coaching career in 1950 at Holy Name High School in Henderson, Ky., going 39-27 in two seasons. He followed by going 19-6 in 1952-53 at Parker in Randolph County, 17-49 in three seasons at Kendallville, 56-34 in four seasons at Huntington Catholic, 73-41 in five seasons at Tipton, 74-45 in five seasons at Jeffersonville, 78-37 in five seasons at Hammond, 99-74 in eight seasons in a second stint at Tipton and 24-8 in one season at Carlisle County, Ky. He completed his career as an assistant coach from 1984-87 at Humble, Texas. Known as a “program builder,” his Indiana teams won sectionals in 1953, 1959, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1973, 1974 and 1975 plus a regional in 1968. He coached six Indiana All-Stars in Dick McIntosh (1964), Don Curnutt (1965) and Kreigh Smith (1984) of Tipton, Mike Flynn (1971 Mr. Basketball) of Jeffersonville and Larry Moore (1974) and Rich Valavicius (1975) of Hammond. Barr was a 1944 graduate of Muncie Central, where he was an all-state player and three-year letterman in football and a basketball letterman as a senior. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school, including 13 months in the South Pacific during World War II. Barr then played football in the fall 1945 of Ball State, basketball in the winter of 1946 at Tulane, then football at Ball State in the fall of 1946 and football for two seasons at Butler. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Butler in 1950 and a master’s degree from Ball State in 1961. He was inducted into the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. Barr was married to Jeanne, had daughters Kathy and Janis as well as step-sons Curtis and Jeff Crawford. He was 92 when he passed away on Jan. 28, 2018.
